About Bellmont
We partner with independent advice firms to manage unconflicted, institutional-grade managed account portfolios. By handling the complexities of investment management and communication, we empower you to focus on high-impact strategy and client relationships. This collaborative approach leads to a more rigorous investment process and, ultimately, enhanced outcomes for your clients.
Our specialty lies in constructing sophisticated, tailored managed account portfolios for Australian advice practices managing over $100m in FUM. We leverage deep expertise across asset allocation, manager selection and portfolio construction to create solutions that align perfectly with your firm's unique vision — whether that involves active, passive, or core/satellite models. It is institutional quality delivered with the personal service ethic of a boutique partner.
With a legacy dating back to 2006 and the autonomy of our own AFSL, we remain proudly independent and free from corporate mandates or product-driven conflicts. We view every relationship as a long-term partnership, supporting your growth through engaging, white-labelled communication that keeps your clients informed and connected. At Bellmont, we provide the investment engine so you can stay in the driver's seat. Tailored, not templated.
Investment Philosophy / Our Beliefs
While every portfolio we build is truly tailored to your firm's specific philosophy, our process is grounded in a set of evidence-based investment beliefs. Think of these as our guiding principles — the 'North Star' that ensures we deliver institutional-grade outcomes while respecting your unique vision.
The Power of Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA)
We believe that Strategic Asset Allocation is the single most important determinant of portfolio outcomes. Academic research consistently indicates that SAA explains over 91% of long-term returns, meaning that Dynamic Asset Allocation and individual security selection (Alpha) combined account for less than 9%. Because of this, we prioritise getting the structural foundations right before focusing on the finer details.
Diversification: The Only 'Free Lunch'
The positive correlation between risk and return is nearly an inviolable law in investing, but diversification is the one conspicuous exception. By investing in a diverse mix of assets that 'zig' when others 'zag,' we can significantly reduce portfolio volatility without a commensurate reduction in expected returns.
Disciplined Asset Allocation Adjustments
Because markets are relatively efficient most of the time, making frequent asset allocation calls is often no better than a coin flip. We believe the real opportunity arises at historical extremes. By making adjustments only when valuations disconnect meaningfully from reality, we can enhance returns or reduce risk with a much higher probability of success.
Strategic Activity and Fee Efficiency
We believe in being less 'active' in efficient markets and more 'active' in less efficient ones. We focus your investment fee budget on areas where active managers have a proven track record of adding value, while utilising more low-cost, systematic solutions where the chances of outperforming are slim.
Seeking Genuine 'Jensen's' Alpha
Not all excess returns are created equal. We believe active management fees should only be paid for true 'Jensen's' alpha — returns that cannot be replicated systematically (like 'growth' style) or structurally (like adding credit). We aim to capture genuine, uncorrelated manager skill rather than paying high fees for 'beta in disguise'.
The Vital Importance of Liquidity
To enable swift dynamic adjustments to portfolios, liquidity is paramount. While we only adjust asset allocation occasionally, we want the ability to move immediately when we do. By utilising ETFs where possible, we can execute 'same day' adjustments, avoiding the settlement risks of unitised managed funds during periods of extreme market volatility.
